I work for SAS and ran accross your site. Love what you have started here and the book is a great start.
I plan on reading more and giving some other feedback, but wanted to let you know I have passed on your site information to LOTS of people and customers. Good work!
Good effort. Please keep it updated.
I have only read part of the PDF and will be happy to comment when i am finished... but i wanted to point out a slight error before I continue.
Your definition of the RUN statement is incorrect. It does not tell SAS to execute the program. It is a STEP boundary that tells SAS where the end of the step (DATA or PROC) is. Some steps (like PROC SQL and some graphing steps) use the QUIT Statement as the step boundary.
Because SAS executes one step at a time, it needs to know where the step begins and ends. (Some folks don't use the RUN Statement, instead they start a new step. When SAS sees the next DATA or PROC statement, it knows the previous step ended.)
What tells SAS to execute the program is either a) hitting the running person button or b) using the SUBMIT command.
(There are other ways, i just mention two.)
No worries- this is a common misconception! Thanks for putting this document together!
Your statement "Values of numeric variables can only be numbers or a period (.) for missing data."
I think this is incomplete. Numeric variables contain the digits 0 through 9, +, -, ., and E for scientific notation).

I am a beginner to SAS. I have completed my certification in SAS.
I am curious about the Banking/Financial services projects using SAS.
Daily I am checking on the web to find blogs on "Using SAS in Banking", but
I didnot get any papers or references or any other information. Some that I have found are too complex for me to understand. Luckily at last I found your blog.
I am also trying to understand the projects that I found on web, I have seen a project
that stated generating reports on Mutula Funds Investment, clients information, stocks e.t.c, but I am little bit confused.
Can you give me an idea on this one, like how actually real world project goes in banking sectors. Taking the above Mutual Funds Investment example or any other simple one.

This is just... a commeon misconception... that we have to use RUN statement to execute the program. It is true if you haven't have any DATA or PROC step to follow...

I cleared SAS base programming certification in the last week of july 2009 and i found that close to 35 questions came from this list (the exact question and the same choices - http://sascert.blogspot.com) so if you have revised all the questions here you will definitely pass. i scored 90%..

What's with all these people asking for answers...for god's sake are you trying to pass the certification exam without access to the SAS software?
You can run through the examples by copying and pasting them in SAS and verify the answer for yourself.

In question 11 in SAS Practice Test 2, isn't the right way to do it as below:

Above code not giving expected result while submit this code the result need to show only 3 tot_payment which are greater than 180 but result showing all 9 observations.
What's Wrong?

instead of

it should be

I have a long SAS program. In the MIDDLE somewhere I use Proc Rank, groups=4....
proc rank
data=nicholas.combined
out=nicholas.ranks
groups=4; var _23603 _23604 ; run ;
What I'd really like to do is put a variable, or marker, or something, at the very beginning of the program:
Grp=4 ;
And then in the middle of the long program, put:
groups=Grp ;
And have SAS remember back to what I put at the very beginning.
In this case I am not creating a dataset. Just putting in something I want SAS to remember.
Is this possible in some way?
